Sho’on Shibata is a performing artist, composer, and educator of Japanese taiko and shinobue. Born in Fukuoka and based in Honolulu, his work connects the musical language of Japanese festival and traditional performance with influences from Western classical music, jazz, global percussion, and contemporary sound.
His musical path began at age five with piano and expanded through classical trombone, drum set, ensemble performance, and field study across Japan, India, South Korea, and Jamaica. That broad listening practice continues to shape an approach to taiko that values rhythm, movement, timbre, and the expressive power of space.
In 2015, Sho’on moved to Honolulu as a fellowship recipient at Kenny Endo’s Taiko Center of the Pacific. He went on to perform and tour internationally with the Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble, while developing his own work as a soloist, collaborator, and composer. He earned an M.A. in Ethnomusicology from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa in 2019, with research focused on kumidaiko and Edo festival music.
Today, Sho’on is a performing member and instructor with Taiko Center of the Pacific. He also serves as Dance Accompanist in the Department of Theatre & Dance at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. He performs, creates, and teaches across Hawai‘i, Japan, and the wider taiko community through concerts, workshops, private study, residencies, and collaborative projects.
His composition work extends beyond the concert stage. In 2022, he and Mārtiņš Zariņš co-composed music for the Valmiera Drama Theatre production SIA Ģimenes romāns in Latvia.
He is also a member of MikAnS, a contemporary Japanese folk trio formed with Anju Madoka and Michael Gonhata.
柴田渚音は、太鼓・篠笛奏者、作曲家、教育者。福岡に生まれ、現在はホノルルを拠点に、日本の祭りや伝統芸能の音楽語法と、クラシック、ジャズ、世界の打楽器、現代のサウンドを結びつける活動を行っています。
5歳でピアノを始め、クラシック・トロンボーン、ドラムセット、アンサンブル演奏へと学びを広げました。日本、インド、韓国、ジャマイカでのフィールドワークを通して育んだ幅広い「聴く」姿勢は、リズム、身体、音色、そして「間」の表現力を重んじる現在の太鼓表現につながっています。
2015年、遠藤ケニー氏主宰のTaiko Center of the Pacificフェローとしてホノルルへ移住。その後、Kenny Endo Taiko Ensembleの一員として国内外で演奏・ツアーを重ね、ソロ奏者、コラボレーター、作曲家としても活動を展開。2019年、ハワイ大学マノア校大学院で民族音楽学修士号を取得し、組太鼓と江戸の祭囃子を研究しました。
現在はTaiko Center of the Pacificの演奏メンバーおよび講師として所属。また、ハワイ大学マノア校の演劇・舞踊学科でダンス伴奏者を務めています。ハワイ、日本、そして各地の太鼓コミュニティを舞台に、公演、ワークショップ、個人指導、レジデンシー、共同制作に取り組んでいます。
作曲活動はコンサートの舞台にとどまりません。2022年には、ラトビアのバルミエラ劇場作品「SIA Ģimenes romāns」の音楽をMārtiņš Zariņšと共同作曲しました。
また、安珠まどか、マイケル・ゴンハタと結成した現代邦楽トリオ「MikAnS」のメンバーとしても活動しています。
